CATS veterans Andrew Mackie and Mathew Stokes are set to return to the field over the weekend, but whether they play in the VFL game against Footscray on Saturday afternoon or the AFL game against the Sydney Swans at ANZ Stadium remains to be seen.

Mackie hasn't played since suffering a quad injury in round two against Fremantle, while Stokes has been sidelined since suffering achilles soreness the following week against Gold Coast.

But both players were out on the training track on Tuesday and are strongly pressing their claims for a recall, with Mackie looking in particularly good shape.

"Andrew has trained really well for a few weeks now," club physio Mark Young told CatsTV on Tuesday evening. "He's been a good inspiration for the guys in rehab.

"We're confident about him for this weekend but he remains a test."

The club is also confident about Stokes.

"He's had another strong week on the track," Young said. "He's looking really good."
