CATS recruit Zac Smith is hoping that a big pre-season will have him in the frame to make an impact in the AFL in 2016.
Smith joined the Cats from Gold Coast during the October trade period and has quickly settled into his new life in Geelong.
“It’s been fantastic, to be honest,” the 25-year-old told geelongcats.com.au during an interview that forms part of CatsTV's pre-season series.
“All the staff and players have been really welcoming. I’ve found it to be a great club to be at.
“I’ve really enjoyed me start here.”
Smith, who grew up in North Queensland, was considered among the Suns’ most promising young players during their first couple of seasons.
However, his career hit a snag when he suffered a serious knee injury in 2013.
Injuries dogged him again in 2014, then he found himself moving in and out of Gold Coast's AFL side during the 2015 season.
But the 205cm big man is now fit and firing at the Cats and ready to lift his game to a higher level.
“I’m a late-comer to the game,” Smith said. “I played soccer growing up.
“[I need to work on] running patterns and knowing where the ball is going to go next.
“Marking, as well, is another little area I need to work on.”
