After a career spent predominantly in attack and in the ruck, Esava Ratugolea might have found his true calling as a defender. The versatile tall played predominantly in defence in the second half of Geelong’s VFL season in 2022, and played defence in the AFL side’s clash with West Coast in the final home and away game that year. With a full pre-season focussing on defence now to his credit, Ratugolea looks set to partner with De Koning as the Cats’ tall timber in defence, freeing Mark Blicavs to spend more time in the midfield.
