Brownlow Heritage Walk - Stop 1
14 Sydney Parade was built between 1893 and 1896 for the investor, W.N. Richardson. By 1904, the house was occupied by Charles Brownlow junior, it being located near Brownlow’s parent’s house “Rayleigh” in Ryrie Street. Brownlow purchased the dwelling in 1912 and commissioned the Geelong architects, Laird and Barlow, to design alterations and additions.
Brownlow and his family lived here until his death in 1924, aged 62. During the early 1920s his health began to deteriorate, and he was diagnosed with chronic nephritis. He died at home on 23 January 23, 1924, aged 62. His funeral was one of the biggest in the region.
In recognition of Brownlow’s contribution to Australian rules football is displayed a freestanding interpretive plaque in the front garden of his late home, 14 Sydney Parade. He had occupied the property with his wife, Matilda for most of their married life, with four daughters and a son.
