Brownlow Heritage Walk - Stop 3
The location of Brownlow’s shop, was west of what was known as Frank’s Corner. The building located on the south west corner of Malop/Moorabool Street in central Geelong, fronting Malop Street.
This building and Brownlow’s shop were later demolished to allow for the construction of the National Mutual Building (recently known as Thomas Jewellers). He occupied the building from 1889 until 1914.
Brownlow operated a bookbinder (1889), tobacconist (1896/7), and hairdressing business for a short time before returning to watch making in 1912. By then, he had also become a highly skilled silversmith.
From 1884 until 1887 he served as a club committeeman, and in 1888 became Geelong Football Club Secretary, remaining in that role for 36 years. He quickly established a reputation as an excellent organiser with limitless energy.
In addition, Brownlow advertised to play quoits at his premises.
