Geelong’s round 21 clash with Richmond at Simonds Stadium will not be moved to the MCG, with the AFL ruling out any shift in venue despite media reports to the contrary.
Both sides are currently sitting in the top four and drawing on large membership bases.
Despite the attraction of a larger venue such as the MCG allowing for a larger crowd, AFL football operations boss Simon Lethlean has told 1116 SEN Breakfast no such move has been suggested by the AFL.
"I don't think this would be a game that we would be moved given it's a Geelong home game. It's been fixed with certainty, so it's not on our radar to be moving it at this stage," Lethlean said.
"I think it's a suggestion that's not coming from the AFL or Geelong, and I don't think in my time we've moved a game.
"Geelong has a new venue, they have memberships they sell with seven [home] games, and we're supportive at this stage of supporting a club in their right to host home games once they've been fixtured.
"If Geelong came to us and said we want to move our home game to another venue that is available, we'd certainty consider it."
Geelong acting CEO Justin Reeves says no such request has been or will be made.
“We doubt it could be done and we certainly wouldn’t support it,” Reeves told Fairfax Media.
“It’s certainly the first we’ve heard of it.”
