As far as first impressions go, Zac Smith couldn’t have done much more in 2016.

After 65 games for the Gold Coast Suns, the talented big man arrived at Geelong looking for a fresh start though uncertain of his future.

His debut for the Cats netted three goals, 18 hit-outs and 14 disposals on the Easter Monday stage against reigning premier Hawthorn and from there on out, there was no stopping Geelong’s number one ruckmen.

“It was a great year,” Smith told Cats Media.

“I showed up to the club really with no expectations and just wanted to get out and make a good first impression.”

“I started that from day one, I think, of the pre-season and that’s what helped me set up for a good year.”

Smith missed but one match in his first campaign with the Cats and was rewarded for his fine season with a top 10 finish in the club’s best and fairest.

Now in the midst of his second pre-season at Simonds Stadium, the Queenslander is more confident than ever.

“That gives me massive confidence, knowing that I can back up every week and really perform for the team.”

“Over this pre-season it really does give you even more drive to want to make those consistencies even come closer together and really match up nicely.”
