People seem to be jumping off the Cats' bandwagon in great numbers after the loss to Sydney at Simonds Stadium on Friday night.

Of course, the disappointing performance against the Swans is only one reason for this.

The injury to Joel Selwood, which will keep him out until the finals, is probably the key blow that the Cats suffered over the weekend.

But there remain plenty of reasons to be upbeat about what Geelong can achieve over the rest of the season.

After all, the Cats are still in the top four with just three home and away rounds to come.

On top of that, superstar midfielder and host of the super-popular video series Between Two Cats, Patrick Dangerfield, will return for Saturday's blockbuster clash with Richmond at Simonds Stadium on Saturday.

Then there is the continuing development of the club's younger players.

Tom Stewart added a string to his bow by spending some time up forward on Friday night, while Brandan Parfitt, Sam Simpson, Zach Guthrie, James Parsons and Wylie Buzza all showed flashes of talent and grit against the Swans.

Indeed, the form of the youngsters has made us ponder this question.

Who has been the Cats' best first-year player in 2017?

* By first-year player, we mean someone who was drafted in 2016 and has made their AFL debut this year.
