It's lessons learned and on to next week for the Cats according to Mitch Duncan.

The Cats fell to a rampaging Port Adelaide outfit on Thursday night despite a six goal first term, and now await Melbourne at GMHBA Stadium next week.

Speaking after the game, Duncan said the Cats felt they were still in with a chance at the final break when the margin was just 17 points.

“We played in patches, obviously we started really well,” he said.

“We came in at three quarter time really confident that we could win the game, but it wasn't to be. That's footy, we learn and move on to next week.”

The result adds weight to an already intriguing battle with the Demons who’ll be coming of the bye after two wins against finals contenders Fremantle and Collingwood.

Duncan said his side will be focused on getting their game right and executing it for longer periods.

“We'll learn a little bit from tonight,” he said, “but we've got to focus on ourselves and get our game style in a better shape for longer.

“We were a bit patchy, had good periods but we need to maintain that standard for four quarters, or for longer periods in the game, and if we can do that we usually come out on top.”

Duncan collected 20 touches in his first game since the round 9 clash with Richmond, emerging unscathed after some early rust.

“I pulled up well,” he said. “I was blowing the cobwebs out early but I thought ran out the game quite well, pulled up well, which was good so looking forward to next week.”
