Geelong is mourning the passing of 1958 Carji Greeves Medallist John O’Neill who has passed away at the age of 88.

O’Neill played 136 games between 1954 and 1962 and collected the club’s best and fairest award at the end of the 1958 season despite missing five games with a broken wrist. A classy winger/half forward who could also play on the ball, O’Neill was skillful, fast, had strong hands, and was regularly one the Cats’ biggest ball winners across his nine seasons in the Hoops.

A Warrnambool product, O’Neill was selected to play for Victoria for times and was made a Geelong Life Member in 1961.
