In honour of the Cats upcoming trip to Perth on Saturday, we wind the clock back to a last minute heartstopper against Fremantle at Subiaco in 2008.
The game was not necessarily touted as a blockbuster, with Geelong clear on top of the ladder and Fremantle managing just one win from the opening five games of the season.
But Perth has always proven to be a difficult trip for opposition teams and in 2008, that proved to be the case as the Cats found themselves in a fight with the Dockers.
Matthew Pavlich was causing all sorts of problems early for Geelong, booting four goals by the six-minute mark of the second quarter as the Dockers raced out to a 39 point lead.
The Cats were not prepared to roll over, kicking six consecutive goals in a nine-minute burst to end the first half, cutting the margin to just two points at the main break.
Remarkably with all the momentum against them, it was Fremantle who flew out of the blocks after half time, booting four goals to none in the third term to take a 25 point lead into the final quarter.
But this game had more twists in store, as the Cats came charging back with five unanswered goals to turn the deficit into an eight point lead with just six minutes remaining.
Held relatively quiet after his barnstorming first quarter, Pavlich ensured a grandstand finish as he booted his fifth goal of the match, cutting the margin back to two points.
It was again that man Pavlich who had the game on his boot, finding space inside 50 to take an uncontested mark resulting in a set shot that could give the Dockers the lead with 30 second left.
The Fremantle star struck it well, it looked on target, but just faded late and much to the delight of Geelong fans, slammed into the right goal post.
The Cats closed out a one point victory in Cameron Mooney’s 150th game, with Joel Selwood securing the three Brownlow Votes for his 26 disposal performance.
