The AFL has announced an all-time club membership record of 1,319,687 members in 2024.

That number surpasses the all-time record of 1,264,952 set last year (+4.3%) with 1 in 20 Australians a member of an AFL Club. Of the total number of members, 241,410 are new members to a club.

The Geelong Football Club made a significant contribution to the overall statistics this year, breaking their Club membership record in 2024.

The Cats surpassed 90,000 members for the first time in Club history, making the announcement on the eve of Geelong’s AFL Finals campaign.

Nearly a third of the total has been hometown support, with 32.2 per cent of members hailing from the Geelong region, while 13 per cent of the membership base holds interstate memberships, and impressively nearly 400 members have thrown their support behind the Club internationally.

The substantial growth in 2024 marks Geelong’s fourth-consecutive record-breaking year and is the 11th time in the past 12 years the Cats have set a record for Club membership numbers.

Of the 90,000-plus members, the longest-tenured Cats member spans 79 years on continual support, while more than 700 people have been a member for 40 years or more.

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon said the record-breaking figure was testament to the passion Australians have for the game.

“Footy fans are the greatest in the world and they have not only turned up in record numbers to games this season but have cemented their support by becoming members in record numbers,” said Mr Dillon.

“Our 18 clubs do an incredible job of continuing to drive the passion and commitment of all our fans.
