There was a question on the lips of most Geelong fans last Thursday night: how can a player with 10 games under his belt look so calm and composed under the pressure of Finals football?

Lawson Humphries’ journey from the Swan Districts to an AFL Preliminary Final has been nothing short of spectacular, instantly becoming a fan favourite at the Cattery in 2024.

Those wondering if the silky defender’s skills would hold up in September got an immediate answer, with Humphries collecting 11 disposals at 100% efficiency in the first half against Port Adelaide.

The breakout star would go on to finish with 20 possessions and nearly 500 metres gained, an impressive Finals debut for Geelong’s newest cult figure.

In a hostile environment, Humphries said he embraced the atmosphere and fed off the energy around Adelaide Oval.

“Going into the game we knew it was going to be a hostile crowd, I was excited for the song before the game and it didn't disappoint,” Humphries said.

“On the weekend I was trying to take it all in, because a year ago I was watching the Finals on TV.

“Now being a part of it and harnessing the energy of an interstate game, it was such a passionate crowd over there and it was pretty amazing.

“You get there and naturally your energy is going to be up, so during the week I just tried to control what I could. Come game day I just wanted to feel like it's just another game of footy, cause that is what I feel comfortable doing.”

It has been a year of firsts for Humphries, who moved halfway across the country after the Cats selected him in the 2023 National Draft.

While his incredible footballing prowess has been evident in 2024, Humphries is also staying busy off the field as he progresses through a university degree in Anthropology.

With a family visit this weekend and his studies continuing, Humphries said he is trying to remain grounded amongst the hype and excitement of what lies ahead in the next few weeks.

“That is one thing I have been working on the past few days, I have got family coming over so I am trying to focus on that instead of the game,” Humphries said.

“Obviously I am super psyched for what lies ahead, but mentally if you think about the game too much you can lead yourself down a bit of a rabbit hole.

“I am excited to spend some time with the family, that will be what I am looking forward to over the next week.

“Then once we get to the MCG next week I will be pretty pumped.”
