An elite talent in both football and athletics, Patrick Retschko faced a difficult decision as he figured out which career path he wanted to pursue.

Picking up athletics as a youngster, Retschko had developed into an impressive runner while also representing both Vic Metro and the Oakleigh Chargers, continuing the progression of his football career.

With an opportunity to head to the USA for his athletics, the 18 year old decided instead to stay home and chase a different journey as a professional footballer.

The decision paid off for Retschko, when Geelong selected him with pick 23 in the 2024 AFL rookie draft.

"In 2022 when I came down with an ACL, I had the choice to pack on some muscle and develop my leg strength or I could stay light and head through the collegiate process in the US," Retshcko said.

"I have always had a love for football, I had no doubt that I was going to land in football.

"At the end of the day I always wanted to be preferred as a running footballer, someone that translate their strengths into their game.

"I always had a deep love and a bigger love for football."

Putting together a strong campaign in his top-age year for both Vic Metro and the Oakleigh Chargers, the 18 year old put himself firmly in the draft window heading into the backend of the 2024.

Across the season, Retschko averaged 17 disposals per game for the Chargers, while also averaging 17 disposals and four inside 50s per match in his three appearances for Vic Metro.

The most obvious feature of Retschko's game was his running capacity, able to patrol up and down the wing all game to be a reliable asset in his team's ball movement.

Heading into a new environment at Geelong, Retschko noted some things he is looking to work on as he prepares for his first AFL season.

"I have no doubt that out of the group that were picked up this year, that a fair majority us will hopefully be successful and at the very least, put our best foot forward," Retschko said.

"Especially with the boys guiding us in terms of their journey and the diverse nature of the group, I think it is really going to benefit all of us.

"I need to work on my kicking and my efficiency within game. As an outside player, having that extra level of class can really break a game open in terms of going inside 50, so that is one thing I would like to polish up.

"The beauty of being in a professional lifestyle now is that you have a lot of time to practice your craft, so I am really looking forward to getting in there and it is going to be a lot of fun."
