Having seen what Mark Blicavs is capable of in the backline after filling in for a concussed Tom Lonergan on Friday night, Cats TV ask George Horlin-Smith and Scott Gullan if they believe Blicavs has found his niche?

With Lonergan still a question mark for Thursday night, it’s likely Blicavs will be called up again to fill his role, which means he’ll have to combat one of the toughest forwards in the competition Buddy Franklin.

Young Cat Horlin-Smith, who is about to embark on his 20th AFL game this Thursday night, says he’s confident Blicavs would be able to take on the challenge, as he’s a flexible and discipline player who takes to any task.

“He’s a very versatile player and as we know he can play a number of positions,” Horlin-Smith told Cats TV.

“Should he get the role on a key forward whether it be Buddy Franklin or Tippett, he’s a really good preparer so I’m sure he’ll be ready to go and it’s a vote of confidence from the coaching staff should he be given that role.”

On the other hand Gullan feels it would be an unfair proposition to put such an inexperienced Cat up against an ominous player like Buddy Franklin.

After seeing Blicavs in the backline on Friday night, Gullan says he has the right attributes to take on a job in defence but just not the main one.

“I think it’s horrible timing… given that you’ve got Buddy Franklin coming up,” Gullan said.

“He could do it, he showed it on Friday night where he did it really well.

“I mean we all want Lonergan to get up because he eats Buddy every day of the week - but if it has to be Blicavs you wouldn’t put him on Buddy… you’d put him on the third tall down there instead.”
