WHEN the Cats came up short against the Demons in first round of the 2018 finals series, Chief Executive Brian Cook promised a ‘deep analysis’ into what went wrong.
Cook and the Cats quietly conducted a list overhaul in the trade period, moving on 11 players as three Cats were transferred to new clubs and another eight players were delisted.
The list now stands at 37 heading into the draft, with list and recruiting manager Stephen Wells saying Geelong will call out seven names across the National and Rookie drafts.
Cats Media has taken a look at where our defence, middle third and forwards currently stand before the drafts.
Key Forwards (Tom Hawkins, Esava Ratugolea, Nathan Kreuger, Wylie Buzza)
Hawkins was unlucky to miss out on All Australian selection in 2018 as the Cats’ spearhead booted 60 goals while finding more of the ball than ever before.
Ratugolea raised his hand to become Hawkins’ right-hand man and jumped ahead of Wylie Buzza in the pecking order early in the year before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.
Kreuger adds a youthful option to the mix, with the Cats securing the 19-year-old state league product via a trade with the blues.
General Forwards (Brandan Parfitt, Luke Dahlhaus, Gary Rohan, Nakia Cockatoo, Quinton Narkle, Gryan Miers, James Parsons, Sam Simpson, Jamaine Jones)
The Cats small forwards are perhaps the most discussed players on the Cats list, with the forward 50 set to look very different in 2019.
Luke Dahlhaus and Gary Rohan have come aboard from the Western Bulldogs and Sydney respectively, as the Cats hope to ramp up their forward half pressure next season.
Nakia Cockatoo could be like a new recruit if he can get his body right, in what is looming as a make or break season for the explosive Cat.
Quinton Narkle will look to improve on a promising start to his career at the Cattery, while Gryan Miers, James Parsons, Sam Simpson and Jamaine Jones will be hoping to put big pre-seasons together to find their place in the side.
A move into the midfield may be on the cards for Brandan Parfitt, but the poised Cat will almost certainly continue to spend time around goal.
