It feels like the Cats have been playing the Hawks on Easter Monday for many years, yet the first such clash took place as recently as 2010. Geelong, then the reigning premier, trailed by 24 points at half-time before kicking nine goals to four in the second half and prevailing by nine points. Cameron Mooney kicked four goals, while Gary Ablett racked up 38 touches.

2. Round 2, 2012:
Geelong 14.8 (92) def Hawthorn 13.12 (90)

With a crowd of almost 70,000 watching on, the Cats fell 18 points behind by three-quarter time. But they kicked 4.1 to 0.5 in the last term, snatching a miraculous two-point win in the process. James Podsiadly kicked five goals, while Tom Hawkins finished with 22 disposals and three majors.

3. Round 1, 2013:
Geelong 13.15 (93) def Hawthorn 12.14 (86)

A crowd of 76,300 turned up at the MCG to see another chapter in modern footy’s greatest rivalry. Yet again, Hawthorn started best and led by 20 points at half-time. Geelong then kicked five goals to two in the third quarter to lead narrowly at the final change. The Cats hung on in a classic finish to win by seven points. Joel Selwood led the way with 33 disposals and a goal.

4. Round 5, 2014:
Geelong 15.16 (106) def Hawthorn 12.15 (87)

With 80,222 people in the stands at the MCG, the Cats led narrowly at every change, then kicked away in the last quarter to win by 19 points. In a game notable for the fact the players had their names printed above their names on the backs of their jumpers, Tom Hawkins was immense up forward with five goals, including a couple of game-breakers in the final term. Cats fans might remember Hawkins was wearing Josh Walker’s jumper, due to the fact his own guernsey had been torn, when he kicked those last-quarter goals.

5. Round 1, 2016:
Geelong 18.8 (116) def Hawthorn 12.14 (86)

Patrick Dangerfield began his career as a Geelong player in extraordinary fashion, tallying 43 disposals, 10 inside-50s and seven clearances while leading the Cats to a 30-point win. With a crowd of 74,218 watching on, Zac Smith, Josh Caddy and Darcy Lang were also impressive, each of them kicking three goals.
