Former Cat Gary Ablett Jr says he can see parallels between his young Suns and the Geelong side of a decade ago.
Gold Coast have begun the season in disappointing fashion, sitting at 2-4 in 13th position, while Ablett and senior coach Rodney Eade have bore the brunt of criticism.
The Suns will host the 32-year-old midfielder’s former team on Saturday night at Metricon Stadium and Ablett says like the Cats of old, the Suns could be about to click.
“We’re not getting the results in terms of wins, but I don’t think we’re too far away,” Ablett told the Herald Sun.
“I can remember what it was like back at the Cats in 2006 — we had a really disappointing season and missed the finals — and then it just clicked. I feel the same here, that we’re not too far away.
“I think the expectation is because we’ve been in the competition for six years [but] maybe we’re having a second coming.
“That’s fine. Internally we know what the expectations are.”
This will be the sixth time Ablett has faced the club he won two premierships with, and the novelty is yet to wear off for the two-time Brownlow medallist.
“It’s always fun running out against my old teammates,” Ablett said.
“We all play hard against each other and there’ll be no friends out there.
“But as soon as we walk off the field we’ll shake hands and it’s always good to catch up.”
