Geelong has selected its third-placed VFLW Best and Fairest finisher Amy McDonald with selection 80 in the 2019 NAB AFLW Draft.
McDonald was named in the VFLW team of the year while averaging just under 17 disposals and five tackles a game.
The 21-year-old Ballarat product is thrilled to get her chance at the top level after a strong season in Geelong.
“It’s quite a surreal feeling. I’m really nervous but so excited and overwhelmed I guess with how amazing the next six months are going to be.
“It was a pretty amazing season personally for me. I gained a lot of confidence just through playing a lot more consistently than I had in the previous year.
"This year I played in the midfield off the wing, on the defensive side so sort of like an extra defender. I really enjoy being in tight spaces and applying lots of pressure."
McDonald will draw upon her experience playing alongside the large group of AFLW Cats last season to help her hit the ground running.
“Just having them beside you on the field sharing their experiences and knowledge on the game – you basically can’t compare to having that.
“Having that this year in the VFLW will really help moving forward into the AFLW and feeling comfortable already being on a field with them is really important.”
