Geelong’s young midfield group has proven they’ll be well and truly ready to take the mantle as the club’s leaders when the time comes.
Brandan Parfitt and Charlie Constable are two young players Chris Scott highlighted as key parts of Geelong’s midfield, now and in future.
Tim Kelly had a fantastic game as well, earning best on ground honours from the coach’s votes.
Scott sees this development of the young core as a natural part of creating a strong midfield.
“We reserve our right to put some more experienced players back through the middle,” said Scott.
“It’s more likely a continued evolution, and who knows where that’s going to end up.”
“[It’s] going to be a combination, we think, of 200 plus gamers and some first gamers like Charlie Constable.”
“I think it’s part of the natural evolution.”
Quinton Narkle pushed his case for selection as well, with 28 touches and best on in the VFL.
Narkle is just one of half-a-dozen players that Scott believes are ‘well and truly on the fringe’ of being selected.
“He’s one of a group including Zach Guthrie, Jamaine Jones, Parsons, Cunico, Wylie Buzza, Ryan Abbott, [Sam Simpson] who we think are ready to come in and do the job for us,” Scott said.
“It just didn’t quite go their way week one, there’s every chance it will week two, three or four.”
Cats fans have many reasons to get excited about the future, thinking about these young stars reaching their full potential as midfielders.
If the game against Collingwood wasn’t enough proof, they have the whole season to prove they’re capable of competing with the best.
