The odds of Gary Ablett Jnr returning from the Gold Coast Suns to Geelong are probably something in the order of a million to one, but that hasn't stopped the chatter on the subject.

Cats coach Chris Scott was asked his thoughts on the matter on Channel Nine's Footy Classified on Monday night.

"I'll remove myself as head coach of Geelong just for a minute and put my supporter's cap on and I reckon most of us would love to see him come back," Scott said.

"Now, is it going to happen? Unlikely, I would've thought."

As he has done in the past, Scott made it clear that Ablett would be welcome at Simonds Stadium if he ever wanted to return.

"I'm probably like most Geelong supporters on this one. I've always held onto the pipe dream that he might come back one day," Scott said.

"I don't have any information that it's any more than that. He's welcome to come back if he likes.

"If Stephen Wells, Steve Hocking and Brian Cook said to me, 'We think it's a good idea from a list management perspective,' I don't think I'd argue."

Ablett played 192 games for the Cats between 2003 and 2010. He was a member of the club's 2007 and '09 premiership teams and won the Brownlow Medal in 2009.

He has played 96 games for the Suns, and won a second Brownlow Medal in 2013, but his recent seasons have been hampered by shoulder problems.
