THE WRAP UP

With anything less than a win unacceptable, in Round 17 Geelong made the trip to Canberra to face GWS at a sold out Startrack Oval. In cold and blustery conditions, Geelong made a solid start after conceding the first goal of the game.

The conditions made goal kicking difficult for both sides, but Geelong continued its strong defensive form and was able to limit GWS to their lowest score in Canberra in 2015. It was a low-scoring affair, and when Tom Hawkins ($369,000 FWD) kicked his fifth goal early in the final quarter, Geelong had just seven goals in total from two goal kickers.

In the midfield, Joel Selwood ($474,000 MID) was back to his best and Josh Caddy continued his good form over the last month.

For the Giants, Adam Treloar ($550,000 MID) was a ball magnet and Stephen Coniglio ($490,000 MID) found a fair bit of footy while following Selwood around for the afternoon. Zac Williams ($335,000 DEF) provided the run and Toby Greene ($459,000 FWD/MID) provided the target up forward, although he was unable to convert. Jeremy Cameron ($372,000 FWD) was kept goalless by Harry Taylor ($370,000 DEF) as was danger man Devon Smith ($439,000 FWD).

Geelong's youngsters continued to show promise, Jake Kolodjashnij ($157,000 DEF) put in another solid performance in defence. With the threat of retirement looming over many of Geelong's key defenders come season's end, coach Chris Scott will be keen to persevere with the youngster who is gaining valuable experience. Billie Smedts ($196,000 DEF) was held back until late in the game and didn't have an impact when he was substituted in.

THE STANDOUTS

Steve Motlop ($473,000 FWD/MID) started the game on fire with 12 disposals and a goal in the first quarter alone. Not only did he find plenty of the ball but his delivery inside 50 was excellent, setting up Geelong's first two goals. Motlop remained in the game in the second and third quarters, but faded badly in the fourth. He gave away four three final quarter free kicks which severely affected his AFL Fantasy output.

Selwood ($474,000 MID) returned after a one week suspension and looked better for the break. He started strongly and despite a third quarter lull, finished well. He was a bargain price this week in AFL Fantasy and delivered for those coaches brave enough to bring him in. Selwood also hit the scoreboard with a goal to finish with 27 disposals and 106 AFL Fantasy points.

Tom Hawkins ($369,000 FWD) hasn't had a great season, but i n Round 17 he delivered in a game that Geelong desperately needed to win. His tally of 11 disposals, eight marks and five goals is perhaps his best performance all year. 89 AFL Fantasy points is well above his season average of 65.8 and saw his price rise by $11,000.

WHO FELL SHORT

Mark Blicavs ($546,000 RUCK/MID) battled in the ruck all day against Giants duo Rory Lobb and Tom Downie. He managed just the two clearances, almost half what he normally produces, and 10 touches. He stayed involved in the game throughout, making five tackles, but an AFL Fantasy score of 78 let down those who drafted the young utility.

Mitch Duncan ($476,000 MID) struggled. On Saturday, he managed 18 disposals and kicked a nice final quarter goal but did not take a single mark for the match. His running may have been hindered by a sore knee however; as Duncan spent some time on the bench in the second half, although he played out the game.

Corey Enright ($465,000 DEF) has been in wonderful form of late, but his output was down in Round 17. Had a soft matchup for much of the day and simply did what he had to do to get the job done. Went to work in the final term and managed to get his AFL Fantasy score to a respectable 70, but still not enough to stop his price dropping $13,000. A disappointing week in terms of fantasy output from the veteran.

FOOTY PROPHET'S FANTASY FIVE

1. Mitch Duncan (15^th) struggled to gain traction in his second game back from a long layoff with injury. Overall Duncan's performance was another encouraging step in his return from injury but AFL Fantasy coaches were looking for more than 53 points from the young midfielder.

2. Josh Caddy (6^th) couldn't quite back up his career best performance from Round 16 but he had another good game nonetheless. He had 25 touches and four clearances and for a handy 81 points.

3. Jimmy Bartel (3^rd) just keeps on keeping on, this time in defence for Geelong. The veteran gathered 92% of his possessions backwards of center and had four rebounds and four one percenters to go with his 25 disposals. His versatility shone through in Round 17 and an AFL Fantasy score of 90 from a forward is a great return.

4. Mark Blicavs (9^th) competed in the majority of the ruck contests for Geelong against the GWS duo of Rory Lobb and Tom Downie. An AFL Fantasy score of 78 isn't terrible for a ruckman, but it is well below his season average.

5. Joel Selwood (1^st) burst back into the team after a week off due to suspension. He hit triple figures for his AFL Fantasy coaches for just the sixth time this year off the back of 27 disposals and eight tackles.

NEXT WEEK

Back at home, Geelong faces Brisbane, who languishes on the bottom of the ladder. It is another must-win game for Geelong as they look to keep their finals hopes alive. Brisbane boom recruit Dayne Beams will be in doubt all week after missing his team's clash with North Melbourne but Geelong have no such worries. There were no injuries to come out of either the AFL or VFL this weekend so Chris Scott may just find himself with selection dilemmas for the first time in 2015.
