Cats players eager for Lions battle
On this week's Match Committee the Cats players tell us how they'll stop the Lions in their den.
All three players spoke about which areas of play the Cats will have to focus on, as well as the individual Lions that Geelong will have to watch.
According to Cameron Guthrie Brisbane’s midfielder, Daniel Rich, will be a Lion on top of their hunting list.
“Daniel Rich is obviously a very classy left footer and can be very damaging using the ball going forward, so we’ll put a bit of work into him and hopefully we can stop his influence,” Guthrie told Cats TV.
Luckily for Geelong, Tom Rockliff’s one-week suspension means there’s now one less dominate midfielder the Cats have to stop.
“I think we just need to get our hands on the ball around stoppages and beat them in the clearances - obviously Rockliff is not playing this week and he’s a big part of their midfield, so hopefully we can capitalise on that and just get a win.”
Taylor Hunt also said the Cats defence force will be ready to shutdown the big Lions in the pack, including former teammate Trent West.
“(They’ve got) big strong tall boys up there and obviously with Trent West we know what he’s good at, he’s pretty good with contested marks as is Jonathan Brown, he got on the end of a couple last week,” Hunt said.
“So Jared Rivers, Tom Lonergan and Harry Taylor are going to have their work cut of for them this week but hopefully we can give them a chop out as a defensive group collectively.”
Meanwhile Jordan Murdoch along with his fellow forwards will be ready to arm the Lions off the Cats key front-man Tom Hawkins.
“Obviously back Hawk to start with as he is one of the best one-on-one contesters in the league,” Murdoch said.
“To help him out small forwards like myself, Lincoln McCarthy and Jimmy Bartel will be working to get between them and helping (Hawk) out in the air and trying not to bring our player towards him, making sure it is a one-on-one and not a two or three - and also if they have a spare back we’ll try and take them out of the game.”
