The Cats, who sit second on the ladder after the seven-point victory, led the home side by six goals early in the final term before a late Giants rally reduced the margin to a single goal inside the last two minutes of the match.
Scott says the players showed only glimpses of their best form, with the plan between now and September to ensure a more even performance.
"We are not happy with the way we are playing," Scott told reporters after the match.
"We are a little bit inconsistent with our output at the moment.
"The most important thing by a long way is that we are really excited about how much we can improve because it is not like our best footy isn't being seen at all, I think it is in patches of games."
The Cats have bounced back strongly since their previous visit to the Harbour City in round 11, where they suffered a 110-point thumping at the hands of the Sydney Swans, winning six of their past seven matches to sit second with five games to play.
Games against North Melbourne, Fremantle, Carlton, Hawthorn and the Brisbane Lions follow the Cats' bye next week.
Scott said Geelong's finals destiny was in its own hands as the post-season drew closer, with only some "tiny little tweaks" required to produce a more consistent performance.
"We see so many positives in the things we are doing and the games we are playing," Scott said.
"It is just that we know against the really good opposition - and the team we played tonight will be really good opposition pretty soon - they will hurt you for those lapses.
"We are going to play much, much better footy. I am really confident of that.
"We are really confident that physically we are in good shape, we have got good availability, we are playing really good footy in patches that we just can't convert into a hundred per cent of matches."
