VFL Cats switch sides
The VFL Cats will be seen from a brand new angle with the Hickey Stand now hosting this year's games at Simonds Stadium.
VFL supporters look set to watch the game from a different angle at Simonds Stadium with the VFL game day operations moving to the Hickey Stand side of the ground.
A number of logistical issues were highlighted last year when the VFL Cats hosted 2 blockbuster night matches, including a VFL final that drew close to 6000 people at Simonds Stadium.
As a result matches during the 2014 VFL season will be used to trial the Eastern side of the stadium.
The VFL Cats change rooms; coaches boxes and interchange benches will continue to be based out of the Brownlow Stand, however no public seating will be available on the Western side of the ground.
Benefits of the move include:
- Bernie Smith Gate will become the primary entry point to VFL matches with the ability to also open the Polly Farmer Gate in the event of larger crowds.
- Increased undercover seating for spectators in the event of wet weather.
- Elevated viewing from the top tier of the Hickey Stand
- Increased and improved bar facilities and food outlets available.
- Increased and improved disabled access and facilities.
- Crowd will feature in matches televised on the ABC.
- Closer to South Geelong train station for the travelling supporters of competing clubs.
- Closer to bus stops on Moorabool Street.
Supporters will have an opportunity to get used to the new system, as it will be used throughout the VFL practice matches scheduled for this pre-season.
