A sad farewell
Geelong Cats mourn the loss of their oldest surviving player, Ced Hovey.
The Geelong Cats say farewell to their oldest surviving player, Cedric ‘Ced' Hovey, who passed away at the remarkable age of 95.
In 1945, Ced played 10 senior games for Geelong and captained the reserves the season after. For many years Ced and his brothers, Jim, Bern and Ron, all played a very large role in the club. Ron went on to be a member of the 1951-52 premiership teams.
July last year Geelong’s Honouring The Past Chairman, Bob Gartland, along with other club officials joined Ced to help celebrate his 95th birthday.
Gartland said the passionate Cat and father of five will be greatly missed by the club.
“He was certainly a passionate Geelong man and one of our favourite sons,” Mr Gartland told Geelong Advertiser.
"He has always been a welcome face and he’ll be missed by lots of past players and people around the club.
"The Hovey family has been a big part of the history of our club on different levels, through the under-19s, reserves and seniors to administration.
"The Hoveys’ mark on our club has been significant."
