Christensen looks to take next step
Young Cats star Allen Christensen is hoping to join the AFL elite
‘’(We look) pretty good, I think we’ve had a good preseason, we haven’t had too many boys injured, and the boys who are coming back from injury are slowly making their way back out onto the track, which is really exciting,’’ Christensen told Cats TV.
‘’I think as a club we have learnt a few things over the past few months, I think everyone at the club is confident where we’re at.’’
With Christensen going into his third year, senior coach, Chris Scott, is encouraging him to take more control as a midfielder and emulate the role of the senior players.
‘’For me individually it is to take that next step as a midfielder, as we know the boys at the club aren’t going to be around forever, so it is up to me and the likes of Mitch Duncan, George Horlin-Smith and Taylor Hunt to really start stepping up and taking over the middle piece of the midfield,’’ Christensen said.
‘’I think that is something that Scotty is really driven for us young blokes to step up and do.’’
Christensen can see the likes of Fremantle, Richmond and Essendon venturing into the limelight along with many other clubs who have a pool of younger players, who are also ready to step up.
‘’I think you’ll start to see a few teams start to pop up like them (Fremantle, Richmond and Essendon) who have had young lists for a while now and our looking to improve.’’
This season fellow teammate Menzel, Vardy and Varcoe are set to be back from injury and as Christensen revealed on Cats TV, their current performance and ability will do nothing less than impress the fans.
‘’I think when everyone sees him (Menzel) they’re going to be shocked how powerful and strong he is going to be,’’ Christensen said.
‘’And Vards is looking really good on the track and Travis Varcoe has been lighting up the track as well.
‘’It has been pretty amazing seeing him come back and weaving in and out of packs.’’
Two other prominent players that have stood out to Christensen are young left footer, Jordan Murdoch, and tough midfielder, George Horlin-Smith.
‘’Probably two standouts for me are Jordan Murdoch, he’s lightning quick and uses the ball really well, and George Horlin-Smith, I see him pretty similar in the way that I think Lingy was,’’ Christensen said.
“Probably not the most quickest bloke and not the most athletic bloke but just pushes himself to the limit and gets everything out of his body.
‘’I think he’s got a really big season in front of him and a big future for us.’’
