A re-invented defence
Cats TV spoke about how much the Cats have bolstered their defence force in the last few weeks
On Cats TV Andrew Mackie was joined by Hamish McIntosh on Argue the Toss where they spoke about the Cats defence and how they’ve reinvented the game.
Mackie firstly acknowledged how important the older players have been down back, providing a solid foundation for the younger players coming through.
He also agrees that their new and repositioned players have stood up to the challenge and have added a new dimension to the Cats defence force, including young Cam Guthrie, Jimmy Bartel and Jared Rivers.
“To be honest we’ve got some quality older players in Enright, Harry Taylor and Lonergan who hold up their end of the bargain most weeks,” Mackie said.
“And as you said Jimmy’s been able to come back this year and do a really good job for us and Guthrie continues to grow as a player and obviously Jared Rivers has come into the mix and it’s really exciting.”
Mackie also says that the Cats have started to collaborate better defensively compared to the start of the season.
“At the start of the year teams were probably scoring a bit too much against us and we’ve worked a couple of things out and Dale Amos has helped us out with that.”
"We’re now just looking forward to what lies ahead and hopefully just doing our bit for the team.”
According to McIntosh, who hasn’t been able to join the Cats this year due to injury, the Cats versatility is the key to their success, which has enabled them to strengthen their defence as well as their attack across the ground.
“The best thing about it (the Cats defence) is how they cover each other and play for each other, you can see that they’re a team within a team, but I think the best part of the whole side is the flexibility of every player,” McIntosh said.
“You’ve got guys who play up forward who can go down back (and vice versa), that’s something Scotty’s brought to the side.
“There’s a lot of flexibility, you know you just can’t play one position you’ve got to be able to play multiple positions across the ground and I definitely think that is a key strength to our side.”
