Cats TV met with senior coach Chris Scott for this week’s episode of Tweet the Coach, where he spoke about Cam Guthrie and Joel Corey.

Guthrie, who played his 29th game on the weekend, has demonstrated to Scott that his contribution on the field is a crucial component to the Cats’ game and Scott considers him as one of their top players and a future asset.

“I would say with some confidence that Cam’s in our best 22,” Scott told Cats TV.

“Cam is still a young and developing player, he brings some attributes to our team that we really value.

“He’s a brilliant one-on-one contested player, doesn’t get a lot of the footy behind the ball but when he does get it he uses it really well.

“He’s a good player in heavy traffic and someone that we can rely on.”

Scott can see Guthrie moving into Josh Hunt’s defensive role before moving further up the ground, where he can make the most of his agility and speed up the centre.

“Josh Hunt is probably towards the end of his career so we can see Cam filling in that role in the short term, but even long term we’d like to think he can move into the midfield.”

Cats’ veteran Joel Corey was drafted back in 1999 and he’s still playing a strong part in the Cats’ success this year. Last weekend against Fremantle Corey made 22 disposals and equaled his career best kicking two goals.

Scott agrees that this year Corey, among other senior players, has shown he still has the ability and expertise to perform in a variety of positions across the field.

The year 2000 debutant will play his 300th game at this weekend's blockbuster against Hawthorn at the MCG.

“Yeah he’s taken on a slightly different role but we’ve asked that from a lot of our players, especially from our experienced players, and Joel at a 190 centimetres is quite a flexible and contested player, which means he can play behind the ball, both on an opponent and coming off to read the play as well,” Scott explained.

“We still think coming towards the end of Joel’s career that his best position is an inside contested mid and he’s certainly done well in that position in the last couple of weeks.”
