Harry Taylor met with Cats TV for Opposition Breakdown to take a detailed look at one of the Giants' most influential captains, Callan Ward.

Last year, Ward, was presented with two club medals, including the Best and Fairest and the inaugural Kevin Sheedy Medal.

The fast-legged midfielder has played a total of 30 games with the Giants, since leaving the Bulldogs in 2011, where he played 60 games after his debut in 2008.

Taylor says Ward is the highest disposal winner for the club and is listed in the top 10 in the AFL for clearances.

“Callan Ward, co-captain of the Giants, is a great player and a really tough, hard midfielder.”

“He’s averaging 24 disposals a game; he’s really leading his team well and keeping them in a lot of games at the moment.”

“He’s a terrific player and someone we’re going to have to pay a lot of attention to, especially in stoppages. He’s a great clearance player, averaging 4.6 clearances a game, again that is the most for the Giants this year.”

Ward knows how to use his legs and body to push the ball forward, achieving a high number of inside 50s per game.

Taylor believes the only way Ward can be stopped, is by making him defend as well as moving him into unfamiliar areas of play.

“We need to try and get some body on him and force him to go in positions where he’s not comfortable, and hopefully we can get the ball and make him defend more than he can attack,” Taylor explained.
