Mitchell: Hawks confident
Hawthorn's midfielder, Sam Mitchell, says the Hawks are in a good position to outrun the Cats Friday night
Hawthorn’s veteran midfielder, Sam Mitchell, believes the Hawks are in the best position to break the Cats streak to gain their next ticket into the Grand Final.
Mitchell, who was named in the All-Australian team along with his teammate Jarryd Roughead on Monday night, admits that things can go pear-shaped when you least expect it. However, this time around he’s confident the Hawks can come out on top.
"You have a lot of games where perhaps everything is cherry-ripe to go your way and it doesn't go your way," Mitchell told Fairfax media.
"We need to make sure we stick to what we do well and play to our strengths and really try to (expose) some of their (the Cats) weaknesses.
"We should be good enough to win, but if we don't bring any of those ... things, they're going to be a very hard side to beat."
According to Mitchell, the Hawks are not strictly concentrating on the Cats and their past defeats. They’re main focus is making the most of their situation and winning their way to a premiership, which they let slip through their fingers last year.
"You don't get to do it too often - it's a good position to be in," Mitchell said.
"I'm happy to be playing anyone ... a preliminary final, you're just playing against a side that's in the way of what you want, and that's getting to a grand final and winning silverware.
"The fact it's Geelong doesn't make much difference."
Last time Sam Mitchell met the Cats in Round 15 this year he took 36 disposals, six marks and six inside-50s.
