Mark Blicavs was the saviour for the Cats in the dying seconds of their Round 18 game against the Swans with a crucial smother helping Geelong hold on for a six-point win and a secure a top four finish.

Their next assignment will see them play minor premier Port Adelaide in the first qualifying final at Adelaide Oval in a week’s time.

Despite some inconsistent form in recent weeks, the Cats have played some brilliant football at various stages throughout the season and Blicavs is confident that their best can stand up in finals.

“I think in some of our contest work teams are coming after us, winning it in the contest really well and getting it forward and we haven’t been able to move the ball as much as we would like, but we are very confident with the work we have done throughout the year to get us to this point,” Blicavs said.

“We think our best is good enough to take on anyone and we just need to continue to improve and fix the little things.

“It has been a good home and away season to finish top four and we have done that, now we reset and go again for this finals campaign.”

After reaching the preliminary final last year, the two-time Carji Greeves Medallist is hopeful of taking another step and competing in the final game of the year.

“I would absolutely love to, it’s the goal, it’s why we are here and work so hard.”

“I think the work we have done this season is building up to getting where we are and now, we need to reset and go again.

“We are very confident but we need to improve from our last few performances, we know it is just going to get much tougher and we need to come to play, but we are going to use this next period to improve and work hard and really get ready, it’s exciting times.”

Geelong's qualifying final against Port Adelaide with be held on Thursday 1 October with the first bounce at 7.40pm AEST.
