Four Geelong players have been selected in Champion Data’s 2020 AFL Player Rating team of the year.
How AFL Player Ratings work is that players accrue or lose points every time they are involved in a passage of play, and the score awarded to them each time they are in the play is determined by a complex algorithm formulated and refined over a number of years by Champion Data. Whether players accrue or lose points is based around whether they have a positive or negative impact on the passage of play.
Based on these numbers, Champion Data sorts players into the position they played the most for the season and awards the best performing players with a spot in the side.

It was no surprise that Tom Hawkins was the top ranked forward and he was named at full forward in the side.
Sam Menegola was rewarded for his exceptional season with a spot on the wing and Patrick Dangerfield was selected on the bench.
Perhaps the most telling selection for the Cats, however, was utility Mark Blicavs who was selected at centre half back in the side.
Hawkins, Dangerfield and midfielder Cameron Guthrie were the Cats selections in the 2020 All Australian team with Blicavs and Menegola included in the official 40-man squad.
