CAPTAIN Meg McDonald is excited for the launch of the AFLW season when Geelong hosts North Melbourne at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday.

The 12.10pm clash will see Geelong’s AFLW team run out to play their first game for premiership points in 325 days.

“We had training last night and there was a fantastic vibe around the group,” McDonald told Cats Media at the AFLW Season Launch on Wednesday morning.

“We have one more tomorrow night and then staying in Geelong to play North Melbourne.”

“I keep saying excited, but I think that’s a reflection of how I am feeling.

“I know the group’s ready to go and ready to show how far we have come since we last played them (North Melbourne) in the last game we played last year, so looking forward to the opportunity and showing everyone what we have got.”

McDonald excited for season

Meghan McDonald speaks from the AFLW Captains Day in the lead up to round one.

After a gruelling pre-season the team is primed for the season opener and McDonald has been impressed by the growth of some of Geelong’s third year players who were recruited as bottom age players.

“We had a huge crop within that group who were 18 years old and now to see them three years in and taking lead and really owning the future of our team is awesome.”

“I think Amy McDonald has done really well, Becky Webster has done extraordinarily well with her physicality and we’ve got Sophie van De Heuvel off half back, I could keep going on, but I think those girls who are a few seasons in are really taking the next step.”

Webster Welcomes Challenge Ahead

After showing glimpses of their best football in two wins from six games last year, McDonald says the Cats are aiming to become a far more consistent football side this year.

“We are looking at contributing to the greatness of the club and that begins with getting a four-quarter performance happening.

“That was the challenge for us last year and we still want to work on how we deal with momentum in games, (in the past) we have started well, now let’s hope we can start well and then in the third, fourth and throughout the season.

“So that’s what we are looking for, to establish our brand and make sure we can play it week in week out.”
