Geelong coach Chris Scott believes his side’s poor tackling display against North Melbourne is a concern that can be addressed quickly.

The Cats struggled to lay a hand on the Roos in the opening stanza of last week’s one-point win, only laying 12 tackles to half time.

A few choice words in the main change seemed to rectify the issue as Geelong pinned some 48 tackles for the remainder of the game, and speaking on this week’s episode of Momentum Energy’s #AskTheCoach, Scott called for continued improvement against the Demons this week.

“That was one of the big concerns,” Scott said.

“It was a combination of things. Only 12 or 13 tackles in a half is very unusual for us. I think the main go to there, for most people, is around effort – and that’s certainly a part of it.

“But there were some technical areas around the contest that made it very, very hard to tackle when we were outnumbered.

“In fact, a couple of occasions the intent to get at them was quite good but when you’re heavily outnumbered around the ball it makes it more difficult.

“Against a really good contested side this week in Melbourne, we’re going to have to improve that part significantly.

Fortunately, it is something that can be turned around quickly, as we saw with our pressure around the contest late in the game [in round two].”
