There's just 30 days to go until Geelong kicks off its 2022 AFLW campaign against North Melbourne at Arden Street.
Cats Media will be counting down some key moments from the Cats Women's first three seasons as anticipation builds for a huge 2022.
30 days to go: The introduction of themed rounds
The 2021 season saw the introduction of two themed rounds that the Cats proudly played a part in - Pride Round and Indigenous Round.
In Round 2, the team wore the club’s first Pride Guernsey against Collingwood at Victoria Park. The guernsey was designed by members of the AFLW team and the club’s pride supporter group, and featured a rainbow hoop, the word “YES” above each players’ number in support of marriage equality and the Transgender flag on either shoulder.
It was a wonderful way to celebrate our diverse community and a powerful message of inclusion and acceptance.
Three weeks later, the players donned the club’s first AFLW Indigenous Guernsey for Indigenous Round against Richmond at GMHBA Stadium. Designed by Corrina Eccles, a traditional owner of Wadawurrung Country, the guernsey represented a local story and incorporated a number of meaningful landmarks across the Barwon region.
Both the Pride and Indigenous rounds will return in 2022. Geelong will host next season’s Pride game in Round 3 against Collingwood on Friday, 21 January and Indigenous Round will again take place against Richmond, this time at the Swinburne Centre in Round 8 on Saturday, 26 February.
