With just five days to go until the start of the 2022 AFLW season, let’s take a look back at some of the club’s best wins.
Across the Cats’ three seasons, there have been a number of victories, including their two wins on the road against the Gold Coast and a narrow-fought victory at home against Carlton. Every win is enjoyable, however there are three victories that stand out.
Firstly, the club couldn’t have had a more fitting introduction to the competition than their first ever win in Round 1, 2019 against Collingwood, in front of 18,000 cheering fans.
The tightly-fought contest went down to the wire with a single point separating the two teams at the final siren. Local hero Maddie Boyd kicked two goals, No.1 draft pick Nina Morrison was best on ground and the team spent the night sharing the win with thousands of Geelong fans. It was a fairy-tale start to the club’s history in the AFLW.
In Round 5 of the same season, the Cats claimed their biggest scalp when they defeated Brisbane by 27 points at the Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex.
It was significant for a couple of reasons: firstly, Brisbane was an established and successful team, having played in consecutive grand finals in 2017 and 2018, and, secondly, because the team held Brisbane to the lowest total (1.2.8) in AFLW history at the time.
Rocky Cranston, Olivia Purcell and Renee Garing lead the way in disposals and up forward Kate Darby kicked three goals, helped by Mia-Rae Clifford and Purcell who both kicked one each.
Finally, there was the club’s highest scoring game against Richmond in Round 4, 2020 played on a warm day at Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo in front of nearly 5,000 fans.
It was a win that required teamwork, resilience and lots of goals as the Cats held off the determined Tigers, eventually defeating their opponents by 22 points. The team had a record eight individual goalscorers, with a number of players kicking their first goal for the club. It was a gutsy team win to remember.
In just five day’s time we have the opportunity to add to this list. We can’t wait!
