Richmond AFL listed players Richard Tambling and Mark Coughlan dominated the midfield while Jay Schulz proved a handful for the Cats’ defenders kicking seven goals.
Geelong got off to the best of starts kicking the first goal very early on and continued to stay with the Tigers until quarter time. The Cats went into the break 14 points down. Brodie Moles started the game off well with nine possessions continuing his good form from last round.
The next three quarters went along a similar path with Coburg dominating around the ground and except for the first 10 minutes of the third quarter where Geelong made a charge kicking the first few goals, the tigers never looked threatened.
Among the debutants to shine Rookie listed player Bryn Weadon kicked two goals and took some strong marks. GFL player Paul Carson gathered 20 possessions, 10 which were hard ball gets, laid seven tackles, had seven clearances and kicked one goal and Kane Smith who had 19 possessions, eight hard ball gets, laid five tackles and kicked three goals himself all didn’t look out of place at VFL level.
“Carson and Smith both got better as the game went on which was very encouraging. Bryn Weadon was solid for his first game up which was also pleasing. Benny Johnson and Ben Raidme where also solid after the game started and were a few positives to come out of the game after a pretty disappointing loss.” Coach Dale Amos said.
Another positive for the Cats was Trent West after being dropped from the AFL side last week came back and gave the Cats midfielders first use after getting his hand on the ball first 37 times in the ruck.
“He rucked pretty well. Westy was influential and made sure we got first use of the ball, it’s impressive when guys like that come back and come straight in and play the way we want them to play.” Amos said.
A key problem for the Cats was the hard ball gets where they were smashed 105 to 141.
“We got beaten pretty badly there, it probably showed in the end where they out scored us, it showed if you get your hands first to the footy your going to get more use out of it.” Amos said.
A couple of niggling injuries for the Cats didn’t help the team with players sporting rolled ankles and slight strains, but with the week off this week should be recovered in time.
