VFL skipper Selwood retires
Geelong VFL premiership captain Troy Selwood has announced his retirement from football to focus on off-field role.
Selwood, who joined the Cats VFL side in 2011, previously played 75 games for the Brisbane Lions before joining the Cats.
In his three seasons in the blue and white, Selwood captained the Cats to a VFL premiership in 2012 and to a grand final in 2013 whilst also working full time in the Cats football department.
Selwood was also recognised individually during his three years in the VFL including making back-to-back VFL Team of the Year sides in 2012 and 2013 and finishing runner up in the club’s 2012 VFL best and fairest.
“I have felt very privileged and honoured to have led the VFL Cats on-field over the past three years.” Selwood said.
“It has been an incredibly rewarding role, where I have enjoyed being able to assist with the development of the Clubs younger players whilst also enjoying the ultimate success. To be able to call myself a VFL premiership player with the Geelong Football Club is something I will always look back on with fond memories.”
“To be coached and mentored by some fantastic football people in Matthew Knights, Dale Amos, Paul Hood, Nigel Lappin, Matthew Egan & Max Rooke has been a fantastic experience. I have also really enjoyed working with Ben Waller and Vic Fuller. I can't thank them all enough.”
“Whilst moving on from my playing role, I am looking forward to keeping a close eye on our VFL program. Hopefully I will be witnessing sustained success for the Bendigo Bank Cats for years to come.”
Geelong VFL coach Matthew Knights paid tribute to Selwood.
“Troy’s capacity to play at a high level, lead the team and provide guidance for young players on and off the field was outstanding.” Knights said.
“His ability to assist in providing a link between the coaches and players helped the entire club enormously.”
Cats general manager of football, Neil Balme, said whilst Selwood will no longer lead the Cats up and coming players on the field he will play an important part of it.
“Troy has been an invaluable resource to the club both on and off the field.” Balme said.
“As captain of our VFL side for the past three years, Troy has provided both skill and leadership of the highest level,”
“His ability to guide both our younger and older players on the field was a key reason behind the recent success of the VFL side,”
“We now look forward to Troy having more time to assist in his off field role with the club where he has already shown the beginnings of a long and successful career in football operations.”
