Geelong senior coach Chris Scott says he is acutely aware of his side’s struggles to limit runs of opposition scoring.
The Cats conceded seven goals to nil in the first quarter against Collingwood last week at the MCG and had five consecutive third quarter goals kicked against them in seven minutes when playing West Coast at Simonds Stadium in round seven – the majority of which were kicked directly from centre clearances.
Geelong also were at pains to stop a barrage of second quarter goals from Greater Western Sydney in round two, which saw the Cats down by as much as 37 points in a game they went on to lose by just 13.
And whilst each game has presented its difference challenges, Scott concedes that getting your hands on the ball first is the best form of defence.
“It’s something that we’re really conscious of,” Scott said on this week’s episode of #TweetTheCoach.
“All three of those games were a little bit different, but generally when the opposition get a run on the centre bounces are crucial.”
“The West Coast game was probably the best example of that, where they were just getting the ball out of the middle, taking it inside 50 and scoring.”
