Geelong Cats have announced the signing of VFLW player Melissa Bragg to its AFLW list ahead of Sunday’s Round 1 clash against Richmond. Bragg’s signing now sees the Club’s playing list complete for Season 7.
Bragg’s elite netball career began in 2015 playing for the Victorian Fury, before signing with the Collingwood Magpies in 2018 in the Super Netball League. Bragg made her transition from netball to football in 2022, joining the Geelong Cats VFLW team.
Bragg’s ingrained competitiveness and elite standards has seen the talented netballer transition to football seamlessly. Bragg started the VFLW season in the backline, demonstrating her intercept marking and defensive abilities. Bragg continued to highlight her capabilities throughout the season, playing in both in the forward line and ruck.
Former VFLW Coach Andrew Bruce praised Bragg’s versatility and performance.
“Mel is a highly competitive player who excelled in her first year at VFLW level. Her ability to play at both ends of the ground was demonstrated throughout the season.
“Mel’s natural competitiveness and willingness to learn was highlighted throughout her VFLW season, and her key attributes will be a welcomed addition to our AFLW list.”
Moving to a forward role in Round 3 of the VFLW season, Bragg demonstrated her versatility and athleticism, kicking four majors and having a Best on Ground performance.
General Manager of Women’s Football Brett Johnson also expressed his excitement for Bragg.
“Mel’s competitiveness, character and attitude to training is first class and we feel these attributes will serve Mel and the team well in Season 7.”
Bragg's signing follows on from young ruck Kalani Scoullar being added to the primary list ahead of the Cats' practice match against Gold Coast Suns.
