Cats can do it
Chris Scott believes the Cats hold a brand of footy that can compete against the Hawks
Senior coach, Chris Scott, has confidence his team will pull out their best form for the Hawks this Friday night and their number one defender, Brian Lake, isn’t going to stop them.
Scott acknowledges that the Cats need to tweak a couple of areas before they hit the MCG. However, the Cats performance in the second half last week has already shown that such imperfections can be fixed.
“We’ll certainly work on our goal kicking that will be the logical step,” Scott told Cats TV on Tweet the Coach.
“We have taken some difficult shots as well as the sodas, the one’s you just need to kick, we need to practice those and practice them effectively, but within the game we probably need to work on our shot selection a little bit more.
“We’ve kicked quite a few long points and quite a few rushed long entries, where we could probably be a little bit more circumspect with our ball use.”
Scott says the Cats have battled with consistency all year, although, their tenacious brand of footy has more often than not pushed them across the line. Which is why Scott remains positive going into Friday night’s Preliminary Final against the Hawks.
“In terms of the fast starts we’ve been a little bit inconsistent throughout the year,” Scott said.
“Some games we’ve blown the opposition away and play great footy in the first quarter. Round 15 against Hawthorn was probably an example of that and others we have been a little bit slower.
“If you watch the Port Adelaide game closely on the weekend we were actually pretty good for the first 10 minutes, kicked the first two goals and probably should have kicked another couple. The two goals or three goals they (Port Adelaide) got late in the quarter to get themselves back into it were on the back of some very very poor errors from us that we hope we don’t see this weekend.
“We will be positive and go in with confidence that our style of footy will be played right from the start.”
Last time the Cats met the Hawks in Round 15 the Cats kept their front position until the very end and finished with a 10-point win.
Hawthorn’s two-time All-Australian defender, Brain Lake, may carry a threatening resume but Scott believes he has nothing that the Cats can’t match.
“Well he’s a very good defensive player but he does work off offensively as well and he’s not afraid to go for his marks,” Scott explained.
“If we can deliver the ball well and make him a little bit more accountable that’s certainly plan A, but we tend not to play a style of footy that relies on giving it to our key forwards on a platter. We back them to win contests, although Brian is a very good contested player, we think we’ve got a couple down there who are pretty handy as well.”
