Charlotte Simpson is off to a flying start in her first year on the Cats’ VFLW list, dominating in her midfield role.
Last Sunday, the Cats achieved their third win of the season against the Southern Saints in Sandringham. Simpson stood tall in tough conditions, amassing a game-high 31 disposals and 12 clearances, as well as seven tackles, driving Geelong out of stoppages.
It was her second such commanding output after she also led everyone on the field for disposals against Carlton in Round 2 with 26, as well as 10 clearances and six tackles.
Simpson said her strong performance on the weekend came off the back of her hard work across the pre-season while coming back from injury.
“(I’m) very happy with how the start of the season has gone and we’ve only lost one game for the year, so it will be pretty exciting to see what happens for the rest of the season. Altogether, I think as a team we’re killing it and just getting better every week, which is great to see,” she said.
“I think as a team we really worked together and held our width really well around the ground, but also, we adjusted to the weather conditions to not overuse it, so then we were able to then get it forward and lock it in there really well.”
Simpson said she was enjoying her time in the Cats midfield, a role she relishes.
“You’ve got to be able to transition up and down the ground, not always having to push up forward, but when you are needed you do need to get in there,” she said.
“The most important part (of my role) is just being able to link up with both lines as well. Transitioning the ball from the backline is about having that connection with them and then also getting it forward. You need to know the forward craft and how they’re going to move around so that you can get it into the forward line securely for them.”
Simpson said she aims for consistency across the remainder of the season to achieve the best possible results personally and for the team.
“I just hope to give my absolute best. Every week I’m finding that I can push even harder than I have before, so just trying to bring that intensity for the whole team is really important for me. I don’t really mind if we win or lose, (but) obviously it would be great to go far and maybe get into the finals,” she said.
“The ultimate goal is just kind of improving, which you can already see. From Rounds 1 to 4, we’ve had a huge improvement.”
Geelong will take on the Western Bulldogs this Saturday, April 22 at Deakin University Elite Sports Precinct.
