Liv Cicolini has kicked off the season with a strong start in her first year playing for the Geelong Cat’s VFLW team.
Last Saturday at Arden Street Oval, Cicolini marked and kicked the winning goal against North Melbourne, just seconds before the final siren.
Cicolini performed consistently across the match, finishing with two goals, six tackles, eight disposals and five marks. She was relieved after kicking the last goal to put Geelong in front and claiming a well-deserved win, redeeming their previous loss to North Melbourne in Round 1.
“I was just glad I kicked it. It was a rough game, but it was super good to get the win, that’s five in a row for us now so, we’re up and about,” Cicolini told the VFL/W State of Play podcast.
“They beat us at home and then we were going over to their home, so we wanted to sort of get one back on them, and we knew how much work we’ve put in since we played them in Round 1.
“I think we were confident in our method and everyone in the team. We all trusted each other, which I think has helped us so much.”
Cicolini said that upholding consistency and perseverance at training is the key to maintaining a strong position on the ladder, which the Cats currently lead.
“I think there’s still a long way to go,” she said.
“Obviously, being on top of the ladder is a great position to be in, but we know there’s still a long way to go, so we’re just taking each game as it comes, and we know that every single team is going to be a tough one.
“The competition is so evenly spread with talent this year.”
Cicolini hopes to improve her skills across the ground throughout the remainder of the season.
“I think we’re always looking onto the next game. I just want to keep personally building myself up every game, and I think as a team we know that there’s still some things that we need to clean up, but I think we trust our method,” she said.
“I love kicking goals and I think I’m pretty dangerous around the goals so, I know if I can do that I’m playing my role for the team.
“We’re just going to keep working hard on Tuesday and Thursday at training and hopefully it’s a good game between us and the ’Pies.”
The Cats play against Collingwood at Deakin University this Saturday, with first bounce at 10.30am.
