Despite being subbed out of the Cats’ 26 point win over Adelaide on Saturday, Geelong coach Chris Scott says that Patrick Dangerfield’s hamstring issue is ‘not serious.’
Dangerfield had been continuing his recent run of good form with 16 a team-high 16 disposals before he was replaced by Ollie Dempsey with an apparent leg injury.
“I had a quick chat to him and our medical staff and it appears to me, and this is always dangerous to say, it's not serious,”’ Scott told media post game.
“It seems a little confusing in some ways - subbed off with a hamstring, it's not great news - so hopefully the damage can be mitigated there and he doesn't miss too much, but I would be clear if it was a really serious one, which was our fear because he was subbed off pretty quickly.”
But Scott said the move was more precautionary than an indication of how serious the injury was.
“It wasn't an indication of the severity it was more, 'there's something there and not something that we should take a risk with', so don't muck around getting Ollie Dempsey into the game.”
Dangerfield himself spoke to Fox Footy after the game said it'll be scanned on Sunday, but like Scott, he's optimistic it is 'minor.'
“I was genuinely jogging and all of a sudden I felt a bit of hamstring awareness,” he said. “It was like ‘I reckon I’ve done it’, but hopefully on the minor scale.
“Having done one before on the belly, this doesn’t feel like that. But it wasn’t worth the risk a minute into the second half.
“Thankfully the guys finished off a really solid game against a team that’s playing really great footy.
“We’ll scan it (on Sunday) and then reassess where it’s at. It feels minor, but you can never really tell with these sorts of things.”
Geelong’s next game is against Richmond at the MCG on Friday night.
