On a stellar winter’s day, the Cats hosted the Box Hill Hawks at Deakin University, but when the final siren sounded, the teams couldn't be separated, the match ultimately finishing in a draw.

The Hawks started well kicking two goals, however the Cats built up their pressure in the second, Breanna Pratt kicking the Cats first for the day.

The final half was an arm wrestle, Olivia Stewart kicked a goal in the third quarter and Sachi DeGiacomi followed with another, while Pratt kicked her second goal of the game halfway through the last quarter. The Hawks managed to score again late, with another two behinds closing out the match on an even keel.

VFLW senior coach Elise Coventry was impressed with the team’s strong performance across the game.

“That’s our first draw for the season which we saw as a positive result. They jumped ahead of us in the first and what we saw from our girls from that first quarter was some really positive change in the way they were playing,” she said.

“They responded really well to get themselves in a position where I think we were in front a little bit at one point and then to hold on for a draw’.

Coventry said that the whole team worked cohesively across the game, with Pratt, Emily Ramsay, Molly Walton and Ingrid Houtsma the standouts.

“Pratty (Breanna Pratt) was awesome. She competed well all day. Got ourselves in position to take some strong marks and score. Not only does she compete in the air she hunts well at ball and ground level as well, so yeah it was great to see her get some reward with goals,” she said.

“I thought Emily Ramsay on the wing was really strong and the reason she stands out is some of her overhead marking which was the same for then Molly Walton and Ingrid Houtsma. All of them brought themselves into the game by taking some really strong contested marks.

Coventry is of the group’s growth across the season and hopes that see further consistency in the final weeks.

“Going forward with our group of VFLW girls we only had Ingrid as an AFLW player so this is our chance now as a VFLW group to put our stamp on our style compared to our last game now there’s been some really positive growth in that area,” she said.

With only two points separating 3rd and 7th, the Cats are still holding onto a spot in the top four with Collingwood (6th) and Williamstown (5th) to come.
