Geelong returned to the winner’s list in fine fashion on Saturday afternoon, defeating Port Adelaide by 28 points to move to a 3-1 record this season.

The Cats lead from start to finish in their first ever clash against the Power, with a dominant opening half setting the tone for the match.

Nina Morrison starred, amassing a game and career high 32 disposals and kicking a goal while Amy McDonald gathered 30 possessions in another strong outing.

Becky Webster enjoyed an impressive return from injury, recording 27 disposals and 376 metres gained in her first game this season.

Chloe Scheer (four goals) and Jackie Parry (two goals) continued their strong starts to the season, as the Cats proved to be dangerous in the forward line with seven individual goalkickers.

Here are the key takeaways from coach Dan Lowther’s post-match press conference, presented by Viva Energy.

A strong opening half…

“It was a good first half, we’ve been really strong with our first quarters, so I suppose the aim was to come over here and set the tone from the start so I was pleased with our first quarter.  The next step for us will be the consistency over the four quarters… to have a good mix of contested (possession), really good mix of uncontested as well, helped us control the game a bit so that was pleasing.”

Dominating possession across the ground…

“We’re lucky with our midfield group, we do a lot of work on contested ball and contested methods so to be able to be strong in that space with the way we win possession first and using it second is really important to maintain control. I think our marks were quite comfortable in the plus side as well, so the balance between going forward and controlling the tempo is really important, it just helps us move the ball in a more efficient way.”

Options aplenty in the forward line…

“We had six or seven goal scorers today again, a nice spread…it’s nice that Chloe throughout the four quarters threatened in front of goal, but to have Rach Kearns to go down and kick a goal as well, some of our mids get through…it was good off last week’s disappointing second half, we just obviously have a few areas to fix up after half time with our performance.”
