Steven Motlop will be the first to admit that he didn’t come back to preseason training in the best shape possible.
But if he doesn’t, Chris Scott did it for him on AFL360 this Monday night.
“He didn’t come back in the best shape, but his application through the pre-season was phenomenal,” Scott told AFL 360.
“He did everything his teammates did and more.”
Motlop, now in his seventh season for the Cats isn’t your average footballer. A terrific musician, prankster and stylish young man, Motlop plays with as much bravado and fun on the field as his life off it possesses.
And his coach is more than happy with that.
“What we really respect with Steven is that he is a bit of an individual in the way he lives his life,” Scott continued.
“He’s not the stereotype of the modern footballer. At least at Geelong, we actually embrace that.
“We don’t want them to be robots.”
But what helps the number 32 is that his numbers across his first seven games of the season are better than ever before.
Steven Motlop's first seven games (2012-2016)
Year | Avg disposals | Goals | Inside 50s | Bounces | Goal assists |
2012 | 13.9 | 7 | 25 | 6 | 4 |
2013 | 19.3 | 11 | 36 | 14 | 4 |
2014 | 18.4 | 7 | 33 | 9 | 2 |
2015 | 21.6 | 9 | 28 | 7 | 3 |
2016 | 22.3 | 13 | 36 | 15 | 5 |
So far in 2016, Motlop has career highs in average disposals, goals, goal assists, running bounces and inside 50s across the seven games.
Impressively he currently tracking better than his 2013 season, which saw him selected in the 40-man All Australian squad.
With all the talk about the Cats dynamic midfield duo of Joel Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield’s start to the year, it is Motlop, a player who may be considered midfield ‘depth’ who may soon have more tongues wagging.
