Sam De Koning will be a test this week to take on GWS Giants as he looks to overcome a hamstring complaint that ruled him out last Thursday.

De Koning was a late withdrawal against the Gold Coast Suns in Darwin last week with hamstring tightness, but Geelong Cats Assistant General Manager of Football Brett Johnson said the Club had opted to take a conservative approach.

“Sammy just pulled up, after training up in Darwin last week, a bit tight, so (we took) a really conservative approach,” Johnson said.

“He will be a test this week, we’ll see how he goes at training and how he progresses, but we’re hopeful he’ll get up.”

Jeremy Cameron is also a test as he continues to work through concussion protocols following Round 9.

“He’s ticking all the boxes, getting really well looked after by our medical team,” Johnson said.

“At this stage it’s on track, but there’s still a bit to play out in terms of the protocols for the rest of the week, but we’re hopeful that ‘Jezza’ gets out there.”

In a positive sign for Cats captain Patrick Dangerfield, the skipper returned to training with the main group this week as he continues to work his way back from a hamstring injury.

“Patty is tracking really well, he’s leaving no stone unturned with his rehab and is super professional,” Johnson said.

“He’s back training out on the ground with the team, which is really positive, so everything’s on track at this stage.”

First-year Cat Oli Wiltshire is continuing to work his way back from a thumb injury, while Mitch Edwards and Joe Furphy are back in full training as they build towards their first games for the year.

“Joe’s going really well – it’s exciting that we’ll see Joe out there in a week’s time,” Johnson said.

“It’s a great outcome for Joe … with his basketball background, it’ll be great to see him play some footy.

“Oli is a couple of weeks away – he’s had that broken thumb, he’s also had a bit of a groin complaint, too, which has held him back a little bit.

“Mitch, exciting again, he’s two weeks away and tracking really well. He’s had the back issue; it’s great to see that he’s on track, and he’s an exciting talent for us. We look forward to seeing Mitch out there.”
