He might be dynamic off half back, but Max Holmes has proven that he is more than capable of slotting into the Cats midfield when required over the past few weeks.
The 21 year old put together another dominant display against Richmond, amassing 29 disposals and five clearances while also sending the Cats inside 50 on eight occasions.
Holmes has looked comfortable playing through the middle over the past few weeks, averaging over 30 disposals and six clearances per game across the last three matches.
The young Cat has been sensational in 2024, averaging a career high in disposals while also gaining nearly 600 metres per game to add a new dimension to the Cats game style.
Holmes spoke on ABC’s AFL Sunday program following the win over Richmond, stating how he is more than happy playing whichever role benefits the team most.
“It is a far different mindset playing as an inside midfielder or across half back, which have been my two main positions this year, but the last few weeks I have been in the middle more,” Holmes said.
“I enjoy playing good footy and winning games, so whatever helps the team achieve that I am happy to do.
I’m not fussed with where I play, as long as it helps the team.”
Holmes made his AFL debut early in 2021 after being touted as a draft bolter, with the Cats trading up the order to secure the exciting prospect.
From there the young gun’s development has been incredible, becoming one of Geelong’s most crucial players in just his fourth year at the top level.
Holmes signed a long term contract with Geelong earlier this year, which will keep him at the Cats until at least the end of 2028.
The 21 year old told ABC that while there has been some changes to the side over the past two years, the connection within the group continues to grow.
“The team has been quite stable for many years, but these past two years we have had a few changes to the lineup,” Holmes said.
“Once our connection grows and that gets into full swing, I feel like we are pretty hard to beat.
It came together in the second half against Richmond, which was really good to see.”
Holmes and the Cats will be back in action against Sydney on Sunday, with the opening bounce at 3.20pm.
